Iustin’s Apprenticeship Story

Iustin-Nicolae Bilibou is the Clinical Lead Dietitian, Applied Nutrition Group Leader – SSN, Cygnet Nield House.

He has shared his story as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2025.

My journey from a part-time Band 6 Dietitian to a full-time Band 8 Clinical Lead has been one of growth, learning, and unwavering support from various individuals and institutions.

Reflecting on this career progression, I recognise the pivotal role played by the Level 3 Team Leader & Management Apprenticeship in equipping me with the leadership and managerial skills essential for this transition.

Having originally trained and worked within the Romanian healthcare system, transitioning to the UK healthcare framework posed both challenges and opportunities. While my background, including two master’s degrees in healthcare, provided me with a strong clinical foundation, the intricacies of the UK system required adaptation and further development. The Apprenticeship programme at University College Birmingham (UCB) proved instrumental in bridging this gap, enhancing my understanding of leadership, governance, and service improvement within the NHS.

Having completed the Level 3 Management Apprenticeship, I was inspired to further my professional development by enrolling in the Level 5 programme Operations Manager with UCB as well. The professionalism and support I received during my initial Apprenticeship made the decision to continue my studies with them an easy one. I hope that this next step will open new career pathways for me, as I find that, while I greatly enjoy the clinical side of my role, there are aspects of management that I find particularly appealing and full of opportunities for growth and impact.

This journey has reinforced my belief in the importance of continuous professional development and the impact that structured learning programmes can have on career progression.

The Level 3 Management Apprenticeship has undoubtedly played a crucial role in shaping me into the Clinical Lead I am today, and I hope my story inspires others to embrace learning opportunities that align with their career aspirations.

Throughout the Apprenticeship, I developed a range of essential skills that have significantly enhanced my managerial capabilities. Time management and organisational skills were particularly refined, enabling me to efficiently balance my clinical responsibilities with leadership duties. I also improved my ability to delegate tasks effectively, ensuring that team members were empowered to take on responsibilities that best suited their strengths while maintaining a cohesive and high-performing team environment. Furthermore, my problem-solving skills evolved, equipping me to approach challenges strategically and implement solutions that drive service improvements.

Another critical area of development was communication and interpersonal skills. The Apprenticeship provided valuable training in handling difficult conversations, conflict resolution, and delivering constructive feedback – skills that are indispensable in a leadership role. Additionally, I gained deeper insight into financial management and resource allocation, equipping me with the knowledge to make informed decisions that align with organisational objectives. These newly developed competencies have not only strengthened my confidence as a leader but also reinforced my commitment to continuous professional growth.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my employer for their unwavering belief in my potential and for providing the opportunity to undertake this programme. The hospital where I work, alongside my dedicated team, has been incredibly supportive, fostering an environment that values professional growth and continuous learning. Their encouragement and trust in my abilities have been fundamental in this transition. Equally, I extend my sincere thanks to UCB and the tutors who guided me throughout this journey. Their expertise and mentorship were invaluable, ensuring that I not only acquired theoretical knowledge but also gained practical leadership skills that I could apply within my role.
