Tina’s Apprenticeship Journey

Tina is the Quality and Safety Lead at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone.

She’s sharing her story for National Apprenticeship Week 2025.

The 24-year-old mother of Willow, who is aged 20 months, balanced her work and family commitments around gaining new skills and qualifications to help her develop her career at Cygnet.

Tina’s Story

I started working for Cygnet nearly six years ago. At the time I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do as a career. I applied for a job and I started working on the female personality disorder ward as a Support Worker.

I then began working as the Occupational Therapy Assistant on Rose Acre Ward and I realised that pathway wasn’t really for me, so I returned to being a Support Worker.

I spent a bit of time on the male PICU [Psychiatric Intensive Care] ward as a Support Worker and progressed into the role as the Referrals and Compliance Coordinator. That’s where I found my passion and I really wanted to progress my role.

I applied for, and became, the Quality and Safety Lead and I’ve been doing that role for two years.

Why I wanted to Work in Health and Care

I was a young carer for my mum, who suffers with multiple sclerosis, from a really young age.

As I’ve always cared, it’s always been my thing, but I had quite a lot of passion more for mental health rather than physical health.

So I wanted to continue that journey.

Although I hadn’t worked in mental health before, I applied for a job at Cygnet and I found a true passion for this sector.

My Apprenticeship Journey at Cygnet

I’m currently finalising my Team Leader Level 3 Apprenticeship.

About two years ago, when I was the Referrals and Compliance Coordinator, my hospital manager suggested I look into doing an Apprenticeship because I really wanted to progress my role. It’s actually a really easy on-the-job way to progress your career and your personal development.

I spoke to the Cygnet Apprenticeship Team and people at the university on my course. People were really open to having these conversations and to showing everyone what’s on offer.

During this period I took maternity leave to have my baby – Willow, who’s now 20 month’s old.

After my maternity leave I really wanted to come back to work and get a bit of “me” back as well as being a mum, so I returned after seven months off and restarted my Apprenticeship.

Picking it up again was a bit scary, but I’ve really, really enjoyed it and I found a true passion. When I was younger I didn’t like education, I didn’t like school, and I didn’t really like college, so I’d dreaded doing the Apprenticeship.

But when I started it, I was really supported by my working team here, my manager, the Cygnet Apprenticeship Team and the university that we’re doing it with.

I really enjoyed it, so I wanted to continue to do it.

Plans and Other Opportunities

Now I’m finalising my Level 3, I’ve applied to do my Level 5 Operations and then I plan to do more Apprenticeships, as many as I can! During my Apprenticeship I’ve done other development courses as well. I just want to keep learning and developing my career.

It’s benefiting people around me too. I manage two colleagues and one of them is now doing a Data Analysis Apprenticeship which has supported him to be able to define his pathway for his career. He’s realised that he’s got a true passion for data and I’m really proud of that because he was really unsure before.

The second person that I manage is going to be starting their Team Leader Level 3 Apprenticeship. I’m really passionate about people developing and continuing to develop themselves.

The Benefits of Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is something that you put into practice on the job you’re already doing. It’s just about focusing on the work you do and being able to continue to develop and advance your skills.

Doing an Apprenticeship is only going to positively impact you, there’s no negative impact to doing an Apprenticeship, and that’s what I really shout loudly at people.

I had a really supportive tutor and we would discuss my job role and everything I was doing on a day-to-day basis which I could incorporate into my Apprenticeship.

The Apprenticeship I’m doing is Team Leader, in my job I’m always leading people. It’s as simple as being able to run and chair team meetings, that’s an example of leading people and there’s clear evidence.

Also, recruitment. When I was recruiting for staff members in my team, there’s another pure example of evidence I can use. So it’s those tasks you’re already doing in your day-to-day job that you can pull out and they can support you to develop on as well.

My manager and my senior management team at Cygnet have been really supportive, whether it’s been me needing to ask some questions, or needing them to open me up to more experiences so I have more resources that I can use for my evidence. They’re always supported my development and they’ve allowed me to develop more and more.

Pride in My Achievements

My family are really proud of me because I started off a little bit unsure on what I wanted to do, a little bit hopeless in a way, and they weren’t sure where I was going. Now I can clearly tell them exactly what pathway I want.

I enjoy my job, I enjoy my Apprenticeship, and I think that’s really good for them to see that I’m doing something that I really, really enjoy, and they’re really proud of that. I know my dad, definitely, is really proud of what I’ve achieved.

As a working mum it’s amazing. To be able to go home, be a mum and then to be able to come to work full time, do something I really enjoy, you can’t really ask for more.

Obviously being a mum, sometimes stuff comes up and everyone’s still really supportive and understanding. They allow me to go and be a mum if I really need to, and have that time, but then I can come in to work and have that role for myself too.

I know not everyone has these opportunities, so I feel really proud that I’m able to do an Apprenticeship, and I’m happy that I feel I can really reflect to my daughter that I’ve been able to do this and I can hopefully encourage other people to go on this journey.

A highlight for me was being nominated and being a finalist for Learner of the Year at the Cygnet Staff Achievement Awards. It was amazing to be recognised for my learning, celebrating with other people, and it’s really encouraged me to want to continue to learn, not just because of the recognition, but just because I saw so many other people doing it as well.

There were so many other nominations, some of the other Apprentices were finalists as well, and it just makes you think you can continue and continue and it’s only going to benefit you and it’s only going to further your development.

My Message to Anyone Thinking of Doing an Apprenticeship…

It’s really not that scary and it is only going to have a positive impact on your future. It’s nothing like school. You’re independent, you’re doing it in your job role, you have a good support system around you, and the people that are doing it with you only want the best for you. It’s just advancing on what you enjoy doing in your job already and you’re just giving yourself opportunities, so you’re only going to enjoy it.
