Acute service for men
A 26-bed acute service for men over 18, Sycamore Ward is a safe environment for those experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and require an emergency admission.
We care for people with a range of diagnoses including psychosis, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder – as well as those presenting with self-harm, substance misuse issues and complex needs.
A mixture of RMNs and RGNs meet the patients’ needs, supported by a committed multi-disciplinary team with input from psychology, occupational health, and a social worker for the ward.
With a focus on stabilisation, we support service users to manage their mental health, reinforce daily living skills and prepare for independent life back in the community. We work collaboratively with them and their families to provide a seamless pathway from referral to discharge.
Acute step-down ward for men ready for discharge
A small, cosy, four-bed acute service for men, Peacocks Ward is a step-down pathway from Sycamore Ward. Our staff on Peacocks Ward are part of the friendly, supportive and highly professional Sycamore Ward team.
It’s a quiet, peaceful environment with the sole aim of working with service users to plan for their discharge. A spacious ward, it has indoor and outdoor social and recreational areas. Patients can take part in an array of one-to-one activities and sessions – as well as group activities.
Our goals are to improve the wellbeing, physical health, social functioning and independence skills of the patients on this ward. We support their return to the community and ensure discharges are as successful as possible.
Acute service for older men and women
This is a nine-bed service that provides specialist support for older men and women experiencing an acute episode of mental illness with co-occurring physical health conditions or frailty.
The aim of the ward is to provide a maximum treatment plan of three months and support an individual to return to their baseline level of functioning. We have good links with the local community and offer a range of activities both on the ward and in the local area.
We work with the individual, their care partners and other agencies to support discharge home or to alternative services. And we offer strong links with the local general hospital, as well as a local GP.
Learning disabilities and complex mental health needs
Redwood Ward at Cygnet Hospital Taunton provides a 9-bed high dependency complex care service for men with learning disabilities and complex mental health needs.
The ethos of the service is to work with the individual to enable them to transition out of a hospital environment in a safe and effective way, enabling them to live as independent a life as possible.
Our comprehensive multi-disciplinary team includes a mix of RNLDs, RMNs and RGNs, as well as occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and psychology. This enables us to accommodate patients with complex physical health needs and associated diagnoses – as well as those who present with specific high risks through the use of evidence-based risk assessments.
