My inspiration into a nursing career
When I finished my undergraduate degree in Neuropsychology, I was convinced my future lay in psychology. Nursing was never part of the plan. Looking back now, it’s funny how career paths can change when you least expect them to.
In 2021, I joined Cygnet Manor as a support worker. At the time, I wasn’t considering a career in nursing, but working closely alongside nurses gave me a completely different perspective on the role. I saw how involved they were in day-to-day care, how much time they spent on the ward, and the positive impact they had on the people they supported. Seeing that first-hand made me stop and think: this is something I could do.
Before working in healthcare, I was a shift manager at McDonald’s. At the time, I never imagined that experience would help me in a nursing career. However, after qualifying, I realised just how many transferable skills I had developed, from communication and teamwork to leadership, organisation, and staying calm under pressure. Those experiences continue to support me every day as a nurse.

Gaining skills and qualifications
I began my nurse training at Sheffield Hallam University in January 2023 and qualified in January 2025. While I completed my training separately from Cygnet, I was encouraged by my colleagues throughout my journey. Their belief in me gave me the confidence to take that next step, and since qualifying, I’ve continued to feel supported in my development through my preceptorship and the opportunities available within Cygnet.
A supportive environment
A huge part of my journey has been the people who have championed me along the way. My manager, Kelly Shortt, and Head of Care, Melissa Greenwood, have played an important role in my development as a newly qualified nurse. They have consistently encouraged me to challenge myself, learn new skills, and step outside of my comfort zone.
Thanks to their support, I’ve had opportunities to participate in initiatives across the organisation, including the Cygnet Model of Nursing workshops, as well as attending training and development opportunities that have helped me grow both professionally and personally.
Having leaders who believe in you and invest in your potential can make a huge difference, and I’m incredibly grateful for that support.

My motivation
What motivates me every day is the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. I’m passionate about supporting those who may not always be able to speak for themselves and helping individuals progress on their recovery journey.
One of the most rewarding parts of my role is seeing service users develop, achieve goals, and move towards discharge. I work with a diverse range of people, many with complex needs, which means every day is different and challenges me to use a wide variety of skills.
I’m also fortunate to be part of a strong multidisciplinary team. Learning from colleagues with different professional backgrounds helps me see situations from new perspectives and continuously develop my practice.
No matter how big or small the achievement, I finish each day knowing that I’ve had the opportunity to make a positive impact.

Embracing opportunities and improving lives together
As a newly qualified nurse, I’ve embraced opportunities to learn and challenge myself. I’ve participated in two CQC inspections across different sites, which achieved ratings of Good and Outstanding in care, and I’ve also supported work towards Triangle of Care accreditation. Experiences like these have broadened my understanding of quality care and shown me the importance of collaboration, continuous improvement, and shared learning.
Proud to be a Cygnet Nurse
What makes me especially Proud to be a Cygnet Nurse is being part of an organisation that genuinely focuses on recovery, rehabilitation, and seeing the bigger picture for every individual in our care.
Cygnet provides opportunities to work across a variety of services and settings, which means there is always something new to learn. The breadth of experience available across the organisation allows nurses to continue developing and exploring different areas of practice throughout their careers.

Our Values – embedded in everything we do…
I’m also proud to work in an environment that actively promotes values that matter.
The Cygnet values of Respect, Empower, Care, Integrity and Trust are not just words; they are principles that shape the way we support service users and work with each other every day.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing meaningful progress in the people we support and knowing that I am part of helping them achieve positive outcomes.
I feel empowered to deliver high-quality care and encouraged to keep growing as a professional.

The future of nursing at Cygnet
More recently, I’ve been involved in the development of the Cygnet Model of Nursing, which has given me the opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the organisation, share ideas, and contribute to shaping the future of nursing at Cygnet.
As someone who started their journey as a support worker, being able to influence and contribute to something so significant has been incredibly rewarding.
My nursing journey may not have started as part of the plan, but it has become a career that I’m genuinely passionate about. From the support I’ve received to the opportunities I’ve been given and the difference I’m able to make every day, there are many reasons why I’m proud to be a Cygnet nurse.
For me, it’s about being part of a team that believes in people, supports growth, and helps change lives for the better.
Congratulations to Holly, who is currently on maternity leave with her baby boy, Louis. We look forward to welcoming you back on your return Holly, best wishes from us all at Cygnet!
