Proud to be a Cygnet Nurse: Seun’s Story

Seun

‘If you were to ask my family about my career choice, they would tell you I didn’t choose nursing - nursing chose me.'

‘I am Proud to be a Cygnet Nurse because I am part of a community that values expertise, celebrates continuous learning, and, above all, treats every patient and colleague with the humanity they deserve.’

My Story: A Lifelong Calling

I often refer to myself as a “born nurse.” Even as a young child, the passion for caregiving was visible to everyone around me. My parents always noticed how I naturally stepped up to care for my younger siblings or anyone in need of help. That innate desire to provide comfort and support is what led me to start my formal journey in 2009 at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria.

Since then, I’ve gathered 17 years of experience across almost every department imaginable – from the intensity of A&E and the Burns Unit to the delicate care of the Neonatal and Labour wards.

In 2014, I completed my mental health training with a distinction in research, making me a double-qualified nurse. This “dual-lens” approach – balancing physical and mental health – has been the foundation of my practice ever since.

Moving Across Borders: Finding a Home at Cygnet

In 2021, I decided to expand my horizons and work in the UK. After passing my exams, I was fortunate enough to receive three different job offers, one with another provider and one with the NHS. I chose Cygnet, and looking back, I know I made the right decision.

Relocating to a new country is a massive life event, but Cygnet made my transition incredibly smooth. I felt supported emotionally, financially, and professionally from the moment I signed my contract.

My Support Network and Nursing Heroes

On my very first day at Cygnet Pindar House, I met two nurses who would become my “Nursing Heroes”: Keira and Tendai. They were so humble, accommodating, and supportive. They didn’t just show me the ropes; they truly impacted my career by welcoming me into the fold with open arms.

At Cygnet, “team spirit” isn’t just a buzzword – it’s something we live every day. I’ve been surrounded by a fantastic team and managers who understand that we are at our best when we lift each other up.

Growth and Development: Never Stop Learning

I have always been someone who thirsts for knowledge. One of the things I appreciate most about Cygnet is that they don’t just see you as a pair of hands; they see potential. My managers recently gave me the opportunity to attend a major conference in Liverpool focused on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). It was an eye-opening experience that deepened my understanding of this speciality and made me even more eager to pursue advanced training.

Whether it’s through online modules or specialised conferences, the culture here is “hard-wired” for growth. Seeing so many of our managers and directors coming from nursing backgrounds themselves proves that there is a clear path upward for all of us.

My “Why”

What motivates me? It’s the knowledge that nursing is a calling that transcends challenges. Even on the difficult days, I am driven by the same passion I had as a child – to care for those who need it most.

I am Proud to be a Cygnet Nurse because I am part of a community that values expertise, celebrates continuous learning, and, above all, treats every patient and colleague with the humanity they deserve.
