Cygnet Hospital Stevenage offers a range of secure, PICU and acute mental health services for men and women in a purpose-built therapeutic environment where the focus is on maximising positive outcomes and recovery.
We are currently recruiting for a full time Maintenance Assistant to join our team to carry out a range of day-to-day maintenance tasks in order to ensure the hospital is maintained in a safe and efficient functional order.
No specific qualifications needed however applicants will need to have a general background of maintenance work i.e. carpentry, plumbing, painting and decorating.
You will work 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday and will be required to be on call once in every 5 weeks but only for emergency (fire, flood, etc.)

Your Day-to-Day…
- Assist in the day to day maintenance of the building e.g. replacement light bulbs, plugs fuses etc.
- To carry out fire alarm tests, water temperature tests and other regular maintenance checks of equipment as needed including boilers, plumbing and electrical appliances.
- To undertake maintenance work as required using the maintenance request system
- To be responsible for all maintenance across the hospital.
- To undertake minor renovation/redecoration inside and outside the building when necessary and to take account of general care of the building when necessary and to take account of general care of the building, ensuring high standards at all times.
- To ensure that appropriate stocks of maintenance consumables are kept at all times, while being mindful of unnecessary surplus.
- To be responsible for removal of waste receptacles from certain locations, including incineration of confidential waste paper.
- To observe all Health and Safety/ Legislation & COSHH regulations and employ safe working practices.
- Comply with all Cygnet Healthcare Policy and Procedure, and with the standards for the department.
- Maintain car parking and other hard stand areas in a clean weed/ litter free condition, report any hazards or damage to the Estates Manager.
- Ensure any work you carry out has been assessed with regard to the risk to self, colleague’s patients or other staff, and arrangements are in place to work safely, and manage the risk, in accordance with Cygnet Health and Safety Policy and Procedure.
We are looking for people who have…
- Previous experience working within a team and on your own in a maintenance / building contractors role
- Previous experience of repairing of various equipment and materials, painting, decorating, plumbing, carpentry and basic wiring work.
- Preferably hold a City & Guilds qualification or equivalent in Carpentry or plumbing.
- A working knowledge of health and safety requirements and safe working practices.
- A good practical knowledge in basic plumbing would be an advantage.
