Helping others improve and turn their lives around – there’s no better feeling. It’s what we do for thousands of people at more than 150 sites across the UK. Be a part of it.

Data Engineer

Location: Birmingham (Hybrid)
Hours: Full‑time, 40 hours per week

About the role

Cygnet is strengthening its data capability following a period of change, with a focus on building a sustainable, well‑supported engineering environment.

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer to join a growing team supporting key business areas, including clinical, finance and corporate services.

This role forms part of a restructured team model, designed to improve resilience, clarify ownership and support long‑term career development.

You will work collaboratively with other data engineers, BI professionals and stakeholders, with clear priorities, shared platform responsibility and realistic delivery expectations.

Ways of working

Hybrid model:

  • Birmingham office every Monday
  • One additional office day aligned to team needs
  • Remaining days remote
  • Workload and priorities are actively managed to balance BAU support and project delivery
  • Engineering standards, documentation and knowledge‑sharing are treated as core responsibilities, not after‑hours work

What you’ll be doing

You will help design, build and maintain our data platform as we continue our journey onto Snowflake, working across clearly defined data domains while contributing to shared platform components.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining reliable data pipelines using Snowflake and Azure
  • Developing ETL / ELT processes supporting Power BI
  • Contributing to a scalable, high‑performance data warehouse
  • Translating business and technical requirements into robust, well‑documented solutions
  • Continuously improving data pipelines through optimisation and best practices
  • Collaborating closely with BI, analytics and business teams to deliver trusted data

Supporting safe and sustainable delivery

This role is designed to avoid “single‑point‑of‑failure” ways of working. You will:

  • Share platform ownership with other data engineers
  • Work to clearly defined scope and priorities agreed with your manager
  • Be supported through peer review, collaboration and realistic delivery timelines
  • Contribute to standards, governance and ways of working — not just reactive delivery

You’ll also have protected time for learning, development and knowledge‑sharing within your working week.

What you’ll bring

Essential:

  • 3+ years’ experience as a Data Engineer
  • Strong SQL development skills
  • Hands‑on experience with Snowflake
  • Experience working in Azure
  • Experience designing and maintaining production data pipelines

Desirable:

  • Experience in regulated or data‑sensitive environments (e.g. healthcare, finance)
  • Familiarity with data governance, security and privacy
  • Experience working in cross‑functional data or BI teams

Why join Cygnet?

We believe people do their best work when they feel supported, valued and able to grow. We offer:

  • Salary: Up to £60,000 per annum (DOE)
  • Professional development opportunities, including apprenticeship and learning programmes
  • Supportive line management and expert supervision
  • Enhanced maternity pay:
    • 8 weeks full pay
    • 18 weeks half pay (inclusive of SMP)
    • 13 weeks SMP
  • Free Health Cash Plan and 24/7 GP support
  • Life assurance, eye tests and pension scheme
  • Car lease discounts and discounted gym membership
  • Mortgage and insurance support
  • NHS discounts and Cycle to Work scheme
  • Smart Health Toolkit (fitness, nutrition and health checks)
